It is important not to confuse prophecy with what is classified in the Bible as prophetic books. Some and not all the prophets of the Old Testament have books that bear their names. For example, the prophecies of Elijah and Elisha are contained in the two books of Kings and not in separate books named after them. In addition, the gift of prophecy did not end with the Old Testament but continued in the New Testament and is still given today. The difference between biblical prophecy and non-biblical prophecy, explains Scott Hahn, is that the biblical:
canonical prophets that we find in the Old Testament gives us a norm, not an exclusionary norm that prevents further prophecy of course. In fact, the norm that the Old Testament prophets give us is referential and Christological in its reference. It points to the definitive disclosure, when the Word of God became man. Suddenly, all the prophecy comes to a point of fulfillment, but not termination. It isn’t as though suddenly prophecy ceased and the need for it. It isn’t with the fulfilment that Christ brought about that prophecy ceased in the sense it is over and done with because Christ has brought it to an end, Christ has fulfilled it. What Christ has done in fulfilling it is what he has done with the law “It is not that I have come to abolish the Law and the prophets I have come to fulfill the law and the prophets.” So now we see the expansion of the truth that was gained by the prophets for all the world, not just to Israel, but to all the nations as well. And so the need for the study of the prophets is very great. The need for the gift of prophecy in order to study and understand the prophets is no less important.
