Today we are going to try stone paper from Karst. Stone paper is made from a mixture of Calcium carbonate (limestone and marble waste rocks) and resin (plastic) and it claims to be more environmentally friendly because it uses less water and no trees (or bleach) in its manufacturing. You can recycle the paper with #2 plastic but I am skeptical because I remember #2 plastic bags gumming up recycling machines so I'm not sure if it's a great option, also the media you use on the paper might be a problem. Then again you are probably not recycling your sketchbooks, they are made to keep! Karst does take used paper back and sends it to the manufacturer who can turn it back into paper if you want to go that route. Sunlight can degrade the paper in 6 to 12 months but I imagine that is in direct sunlight outside but I'm not sure if it would pose a problem for hung art. I have not had the paper long enough to see. It feels smooth like Yupo with a bit more tooth or grab to it and it took many media well and no warping! It's an interesting paper, what do you think? You can see Karst products here: https://karstgoods.com/en-us/collecti... This sketchbook and pencils were sent to me for review.
Pros:
Bright white
Waterproof
Works well with a variety of art media
Eco-Friendly (see above and decide)
Doesn't warp
Smooth yet grabs media well
The woodless pencils did not stain the paper as much as others I have making me think they are likely pigment based although I could not find specific pigment and lightfast info on them
Cons:
Price
Recycling may be inconvenient (if you need to)
Bottom line:
I have a hard time wrapping my head around a plastic product being more sustainable than wood or cotton paper, I guess it just comes down to the resources you want to preserve and manufacture. I think it is OK, especially considering this is an item you would want to keep and not dispose of so the fact it is a lower footprint on the front end is good. I like the paper. It is expensive compared to a normal paper sketchbook but it's good stuff and fun to use.
