Описание: In 1910, South Carolina teacher Maria Cromer encouraged rural girls to grow tomatoes on small plots of land. Her "tomato clubs" quickly spread across the American South, teaching girls aged nine to twenty the basics of farming, financial planning, and business management. Some participants achieved impressive results: one harvested two thousand pounds of tomatoes and earned seventy-eight dollars, while another saved sixty dollars in the bank. These clubs gave the girls much more than just agricultural knowledge—they gained responsibility, self-confidence, and financial independence in an era when women's opportunities were severely limited.
