Subject: The differences between HMO and PPO plans
The two most common types of health insurance plans are Health Maintenance Organization, or HMO plans, and Preferred Provider Organization, or PPO plans.
HMO plans typically have lower monthly premiums. With an HMO plan, you choose one primary care doctor who will coordinate your care. If you need to see specialists or other health care professionals, your primary care doctor must provide a referral. Coverage will also be limited to a specific region or service area.
PPO plans offer more flexibility in terms of who you can see for your care. With a PPO plan, you don’t need a referral from your primary care doctor to see a specialist. You can also see doctors who are out of network. However, keep in mind that choosing in-network doctors can save you money.
When deciding between HMO and PPO plans, the key point to remember is that HMO plans are designed to be more affordable, while PPO plans provide greater flexibility.
