Once a rhythm born in chains, Samba became the heartbeat of Brazil.
It’s more than a dance — it’s the sound of freedom that never stopped beating.
Today, that rhythm moves the world.

Samba, Brazil’s most iconic dance and music style, has its roots in the Atlantic slave trade of the 16th century.
Enslaved Africans, brought mainly from West Africa, were forced to work on sugar plantations and gold mines in Brazil.
At night, they gathered in secret to play drums and dance, keeping alive the rhythms and traditions of their homeland.
These gatherings became a form of resistance — a way to express identity and hope under brutal oppression.
After the abolition of slavery in 1888, freed Afro-Brazilian communities in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro continued to develop these rhythms into what became known as “Samba.”
By the early 20th century, radio and recording industries helped spread Samba nationwide, and through the Rio Carnival, it became a global symbol of Brazil.
Today, Samba represents freedom, identity, and unity — a rhythm once born in pain, now celebrated with pride.
It was recognized by UNESCO in 2005 as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
What began as a cry for freedom now moves the world in dance.
