Sheikh Hamad passed away at the age of 74, according to the Amiri Diwan. He ruled Qatar from 1995 to 2013 after taking power and is widely credited with transforming the country from its traditional Bedouin roots into a wealthy and influential regional powerhouse through its vast natural gas resources and ambitious global diplomacy. In 2013, he voluntarily abdicated the throne, handing leadership to his son, Sheikh Tamim, who has since led the Gulf nation.
