The spot to savour some Malabari snack classics and this is exactly what Food Lovers’ Editor, Kripal Amanna does in this episode of Gourmet On The Road. He treats himself to the elanchi (thin crepes stuffed with a mix of bananas, coconut, sugar and raisins), a custardy savoury chemmeen or prawn cake, a biryani chai and much more!

BIRYANI CHAI
A fancy name for this gimmicky tea poured skilfully into a glass such that the milk and tea liquor hold their own in a dancing swirl! Fancy name aside, and there are no biryani spices in this, the tea makes for a punchy companion to the loaded desserts and savouries here.

Not so pleasing to the eye, the chicken puff is flavourful. A deep-fried maida puff stuffed with chicken, onions green chillies and turmeric, this snack makes for a delicious accompaniment to some hot chai!

A filling cutlet of meat and onions flavoured with ginger. I was expecting a more meaty flavour, but you taste mostly the onions and some flour that’s gone in as a binder in this snack.

This stuffed pathiri is generous on the onions, but a trifle sparing on the meat, which in itself has a bit of a bite. Prepare to spend some time chewing on this.

a cake with a difference, this savoury steamed cake comprises of spiced shrimp sandwiched between layers of the soft cake. On the palate, I detect a hint of sweetness which contrasts with the mildly spicy shrimp. You can definitely taste the shrimp flavour in this!
