On Saturday, May 13, the re-internment of the Wampanoag leader who signed the first treaty with the Mayflower Pilgrims in 1621 was commemorated here at Burr’s Hill Park, overlooking Narragansett Bay.
Thmorial honors Massasoit Yellow Feather — the Wampanoag sachem whose diplomacy upheld 54 years of peace with the early English settlers.
Standing in front of this stone, with its carvings and feathers left in respect, you can feel how deeply the land remembers. This isn’t just a monument… it’s a connection to one of the most important relationships in early American history, and to the people who were here long before colonization.
New England’s true history lives in places like this — quiet, sacred, and often overlooked.
