Like I said in the previous episode, it's now time to disassemble the hubs a bit more and next on the list are the front axle hubs and brake shields!

The axle hubs needs to come off before the brake shields can be removed. The are pressed into the wheel bearings and then secured with a big nut which is staked.
This means that there is only one seal in this setup and the end with the nut is protected from the elements with a cup which, after 30+ years, is really stuck.

For me it was too hard to figure out an convenient way to get this in the press so I chose to use the sledgehammer to get the axle hub out. This is a route which can very well end up damaging the wheel bearings. So that is something that needs to be considered. In my case, and I guess also in most cases, the bearings will be replaced. In the kits with the bearings you also get a new nut and a seal.

After the removal of the axle hub, one of the inner bearing races will be left on it together with the seal. They will be removed at a later time. The generic bearing puller available at every car part/tool shop can't get it due to the ABS wheel being in the way.

After the axle hub, the brake shield can be removed it's only on there with four screws and 30 year worth of collected dirty and rust. These will need to be modified to work with my new brake setup. Something that I verified a few episodes ago. One of them are already modified but the cuts will be cleaned up.
