In this session, we will explore how Gen Z students approach education, career planning, and their overall mindset as they transition into college. As professionals who began our own college journeys during the COVID-19 pandemic, we bring both personal and
professional perspectives to this conversation. Experiencing remote learning, social isolation, and uncertainty during a formative time deeply shaped how we, and many of our peers, view higher education, success, and personal growth. We’ll share insights into
how these experiences continue to influence Gen Z students today, and how advisors can better understand and support them through intentional, empathetic advising practices.
Learning Outcomes:
Identify key generational influences that shape Gen Z students’ academic and career decision-making, including the impact of the pandemic and digital culture.
Apply communication strategies that foster trust, promote realistic planning, and support students’ exploration of their academic and career “why.”
Recognize common advising scenarios involving Gen Z students and develop approaches to support their motivation, resilience, and goal alignment.
Presenters: Mary Kuligowski (CLAS) and Christina Patten (UAC)
