I recently completed my first outdoor camping trip! 🎉 I have to say, the RED ZR I brought along was incredibly comfortable to use! As the most compact body from RED, it surprisingly shoots 6K 50P R3D material. Compared to shooting with the Komodo in the past, it’s vastly lighter! It's also much easier to mount on a stabilizer, completely freeing up my energy! If you are a Sony user, this camera is absolutely a worthwhile supplemental purchase!
1. Ultimate Post-Production Latitude: Dual Native ISO + R3D Format
The ZR's Dual Native ISO paired with R3D excels in high-contrast scenes like sunrises and sunsets. Even if I set the wrong ISO or color temperature on location, I can directly adjust it in DaVinci Resolve later.
The 16-bit compressed to 12-bit color depth provides massive adjustment room in post-production grading, which is a lifesaver for vloggers chasing a cinematic look!
2. Focus Performance: Rock-Solid Lock
I personally feel the ZR's focusing ability is comparable to Sony's M4/3 system. It locks onto the focus extremely firmly, even in low-light conditions.
This time, I tested the Zeiss Blazer 35mm AF Anamorphic Lens and several Sony G Master (GM) lenses adapted via an autofocus adapter. The focus worked perfectly with both (except for the lack of de-squeeze with the anamorphic).
3. User-Friendly Design & High-Brightness Screen
The ZR's boot-up speed is almost instantaneous! This is a huge plus.
The display screen is genuinely massive (compared to the Sony FX3)! The 1000 nits peak brightness allows me to clearly confirm the focus point outdoors without needing an external monitor. I truly hope the Sony FX3 Mark II follows this feature!
⚠️ Real-World Experience: Battery Life & Storage
Battery Life: When shooting in the highest quality format, one original battery only lasts about 40 minutes, so power consumption is quite high.
Storage: A 2TB CFExpress Type B (CFB) card only records for a little over an hour. R3D file sizes are huge, but considering the post-production advantage it brings, I personally think the storage strain is acceptable—you just need enough hard drives to handle it.
Conclusion: The Ultimate B-Cam!
Overall, the user experience of the ZR completely meets, or even exceeds, the performance expected for this price point. If you’ve used a RED camera, you know exactly what I mean. For Sony users, you can directly use the autofocus adapter to utilize your GM lenses—no need to "abandon ship"!
I personally believe this camera is better suited as a supplementary B-cam or a travel vlogging machine. If you prioritize extreme professional workhorse stability, Sony is still the safer option.
