Hello! Today we are visiting the small Hamlet of Binsey, specifically the historic church of St. Margaret of Antioch and Treacle Well of St. Frideswide that both make appearances in legends and stories.

She established a priory and did many miracles and was visited by many kings and peasants
She died on oct 19, 727 her grave is a pilgramage shrine
Oxford is tourist destination always since her
Prideswied priory set high overlooking river crossing - symbolic and strategic
King henry VIII and Cardinal Wolsey (before) chose same location to put their church, college, and cathedral
Powers of the well
Henry VIII brought catherine of aragon to the well in hopes its waters would grant them a son
Treacle
Word only applied maybe in the 1960s - nearly 100 years after alice in wonderland

Binsey is close to site of the deserted village of Seacourt - last occupied around 1400

One of the original monasteries of St Frideswide (patron sant of oxford)
7th century → she escaped to binsey to avoid marrying Mercian Prince Algar → he was blinded by lightning while looking for her
She prayed and brought a healing spring here and cured his blidnness with th eater
Pilgrims traveled to the well - crutches of cured cripples people decorate the church
The well was taken down in 1639 but restored by Revd T. J prout in 1874
Became famous after Lewis Carroll described it as a treacle well in alice in wonderland - first published 1865 (medieval - treacle meant healing fluid)
Regular well services held before evensong in summer during which the congregation si ssrpinkled with the holy water
