Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth. There was never a better example of that than War Plan Orange. It was a series of United States Joint Army and Navy Board war plans for dealing with one hypothetical scenario during the period of time between the first and 2nd world wars. How is America supposed to handle a possible war with Japan? War Plan Orange the longest and most detailed of the plans, it formed some of the basis for the actual campaign against Japan in World War II which included a huge economic blockade from mainland China and the plans for interning the Japanese-American population.
During the 1920s and 1930s, the United States Armed Forces actually developed a number of color-coded war plans that outlined potential U.S. strategies for a variety of hypothetical war scenarios. The plans, were developed by the Joint Planning Committee (which later became what we would call the Joint Chiefs of Staff today). You can bet the Joint Chiefs of Staff is still creating contingency plans like this today for various hypothetical wars the US might face today. In fact it’s one of that roles biggest responsibilities.
Informal studies as early as 1906 covered a number of possibilities, from basing at Gibraltar or Singapore[1] (an idea revived by the British before World War II)[2] to "a quick trans-Atlantic dash" to the Pacific.[3].[5] The plan was eventually adopted was conceived by Rear Admiral Raymond P. Rodgers in 1911.[4] think about that the US and Japanese were planning and thinking about how they were going to fight each for about 4 decades before they actually came to blows. The plan was unofficially used in 1911 before formally adopted by the Joint Army and Navy Board beginning in 1924.[5] Predating the Rainbow plans, which presumed the assistance of allies, Orange assumed that the United States would fight Japan alone. So What war plan orange get right and what did it get wrong? What did they fail to foresee or anticipate when ww2 actually started?
