In this session, we trace the early spread of the gospel as it moves from Jerusalem into the wider Gentile world—and the first serious threat that movement faced. As the message of Jesus opens the door of faith to new people and new places, a crucial question emerges: What actually qualifies someone to belong to God’s people?
By reading Acts 1–14 alongside the letter to the Galatians, this session shows how Paul’s theology is inseparable from his mission. We’ll walk through the story of the early church, Paul’s conversion and first missionary journey, and the historical situation that led Paul to write Galatians. Along the way, we’ll see why Galatians isn’t an abstract theological argument, but a passionate defense of the gospel of grace in the face of pressure to add requirements God never gave.
This session also models how to read the Bible more faithfully by paying attention to historical context, literary flow, and the real-life issues behind the text. Whether you’re new to studying Scripture or looking to grow in confidence, this teaching aims to help you see how Acts and Paul’s letters work together—and why guarding the gospel still matters today.
In this session, we cover:
The big idea and structure of the book of Acts
Paul’s conversion and early ministry
The first missionary journey (Acts 13–14)
The historical background of Galatians
Why “Jesus plus anything” threatens the gospel
How to read Paul’s letters as real responses to real situations
