I have a hard time finding the right word or phrase to describe this behavior which I do see often at North Shore on Long Island. I call it "slope soaring" after RC sailplanes. But that doesn't seem to be a word used by birders and naturalists. It's not hummingbird hovering - they flap wings. Some say windsoaring, but I don't find videos showing similar scenes using the word. Ridge soaring? Hill soaring? Kiting?
I stood on an elevated parking lot with a tall sea wall which acted like a mini cliff. Birds didn't usually linger in front of the sea wall, but used it as a lift boost to zoom from one side of the parking lot to the other.
