Our family lives in an urban setting in Los Angeles and our property is easily accessible to anyone. So I was looking for a way to monitor our home, preferably from my phone. While I considered a conventional home alarm system where I would have to sign up for a monthly fee, I quickly realized that it is expensive and does not take advantage of the kind of smart home technology that is available today.

I did some research and finally came across a motion activated camera system which showed promise. I bought the Dropcam Pro Wireless Video Monitoring Camera and filmed a video to document the set up and show the Wi-Fi camera in action…

As we allow smart devices like the Dropcam Pro into our homes, they can become our eyes, ears and even voice. The manufacturer markets this wi-fi surveillance camera as an intelligent home security system, baby monitor, pet cam and as an in-house communication system.

How does it work and is it safe?

The Dropcam Pro camera sends encrypted video to a “cloud server”. It then securely streams video to my devices. With the optional recording feature, my footage is stored so I can access it whenever I want. Dropcam uses bank-level security to ensure that my live and stored videos are safe, even on unprotected wireless networks. My video is encrypted on the camera before it is transmitted to the server and streamed securely to my devices using SSL encryption.
