(14 May 1994) Aid workers on Saturday (14/5) said they feared as many as 500,000
people may have been killed in fighting in Rwanda - more than
double previous estimates. "Our conservative estimate is 500,000"
said a senior aid official who in the past had given a figure
200,000 dead. On Friday, the United Nations came under severe criticism from the Rwandanese Patriotic Front (the rebel fighters) for having reduced its presence in Rwanda during the time of the killings. RPF General Secretary Theogene Rudasingwa made his comments at a news conference in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Rudasingwa addressing news conference in Johannesburg
Rudasingwa questioning the UN's role in Rwanda following the
reduction of its presence in Rwanda,
he says he UN still has a role to play, in a humanitarian way,
helping the people
but it is cynical and ridiculous for the UN to say it is coming to
stop the massacres and to restore law and order, this task belongs
to us, the rwandan people
