Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) understands that a safe sky is a sky shared responsibly. While airplanes and wildlife don't exactly make the best teammates, SEA has a pioneering wildlife management program that keeps both the skies clear and the animals safe.
A Legacy of Innovation:
Back in the 1970s, the Port of Seattle recognized the dangers posed by large bird populations at SEA. This forward-thinking approach led them to become the first U.S. airport to employ a full-time wildlife biologist, Dennis Bulman, in 1976. This innovative spirit birthed an ecological approach to aviation safety and wildlife protection.
The program, originally focused on deterring hazardous birds, has evolved significantly. Today, it promotes the conservation of non-threatening species, prevents unwanted pests within the airport facilities, and even safely relocates raptors.
Like many airports, SEA's open spaces provide a buffer zone for both safety and noise reduction. However, these areas can also become attractive havens for wildlife. Here's where SEA's program shines. By making the airport less appealing to certain species, they ensure a safe environment for both passengers and aircraft. Large flocks of birds, particularly waterfowl and gulls, are a major concern, but other birds and mammals can also pose challenges.
