Redundant Parkes signal box sits quietly in the background as intermodal express service 7SP7 with NR99, NR13, NR25 & NR35 slips past enroute to Goobang Junction. The signal box was built in 1935 and closed in 2007, a tour of the inside of the box is published on this site.
At Goobang Junction, just past Parkes NSW, a crew change and locomotive reshuffle will take place. Being a morning service, no double stacking will take place.
The "NR" class are General Electric model Cv40-9i series locomotives of which 120 were built by Goninan's at Newcastle NSW and Bassendean WA between 1996 & 1998. They are powered by a V16 turbo charged four stroke GE 7FDL-16 prime mover delivering 4,020hp. Published track speed is 115KMh.
The "NR" class feature a three-stage fuel economy setting which is set by the driver in the cab applicable to the tonnage hauled. The settings are 2,850hp, 3,560 and 4,020hp.
Of the original 120 NR class built 117 remain in service, NR33 was scrapped in May 2006 after a level crossing collision in Victoria. NR41 & NR79 were also scrapped in January 2024 after a severe level crossing accident in late 2023 in South Australia.
The first to enter service from Goninan's at Bassendean WA was NR61 which commenced acceptance trials on the 18th of September 1996, the last loco was completed by Goninan's at Newcastle NSW in February 1998.
