Part 3 of the 2024 pike fishing campaign covers 2 sessions. During the first session I pulled my back which left me unable to fish for a couple of weeks.
On the next session I had a pick up from a pike within 20 minutes of getting there but unfortunately it came off after about 20 seconds. As the light grew the Cormorants started working the drop off I was fishing which resulted in them picking my bait up twice in a short space of time. To try to prevent this from happening I had to bring my baits closer in to try to deter them. So moving my baits closer in meant I wasn't fishing where the bait fish were shoaled up which means you're not fishing as effectively as possible. Where you find the bait fish the Pike are not far behind - and neither are the Cormorants as they are both competing for the same food source.
But, due to the amount of people around the water the Cormorants have gotten used to humans and don't see them as so much of a threat. It wasn't long before another Cormorant ripped off with my bait and popped up to the surface with it in its mouth. As I picked up the rod and pulled it away from the Cormorant it let go of the bait but the line must have tangled around it and it ended up with the hook stuck in the webbing on its foot.
It was safely released without too much fuss or injury and was soon back driving me mad yet again and picked my bait up!!!!! I decided to re-position both rods even closer in which did stop the Cormorant attention and resulted in one Pike later on in the Day.
Now I don't care what anyone says - Cormorants are a coastal bird and are not in their natural environment in inland fisheries. The destruction they cause in a confined environment / fishery can be devastating. It's just my opinion but I think any Cormorants and other predators threatening a fishery should be eradicated (in a humane way). But we now live in a lovey dovey world where more and more of the laws that govern our countryside are being made by people who haven't got the first clue about land management.
Fuck it - rant over lol. Tight lines if you're out fishing and I hope the 'black plague' leaves you in peace!
