Fred Graham is directing and starring in a musical based on Shakespeare’s THE TAMING OF THE SHREW. He is using the production to manipulate his ex-wife into leaving her stable, wealthy fiancé to return to him and her former life in the theater: an abusive, yet exciting existence that he has decided she is born for. In this scene, we are in the play within the play. Petruchio is recently married to a woman who refuses to live the life everyone expects from her. He is willing to make this selfless sacrifice in order to gain a sizable dowry. He takes a moment to pine for the life he lived before, when he enjoyed the freedom to love all the women he could leave.
