TOPIC:              THE ENEMIES OF FAITH 

TEXT:                Mat 17:19-20; 

 

Introduction 

Faith has some strong enemies. They are faith extinguishers and they work together. Once you permit them into your heart, they drive faith away. In the fight for faith, you must deal decisively with these forces.  Let the entrance of the word of God destroy these enemies of faith in your heart today in Jesus name.

UNBELIEF - unbelief says I am sure it is not possible or it is not true. 2Kings 7:2; 

A refusal to believe God Num 13:31-33; Num 14:1-4;  Num 14:11; Psa 78:22-32; Heb 4:6-11; John 12:37; 

It is a hardening of the heart against God Mark 16:14; Heb 3:12-19; 

It is a state of ignorance of God and His word 1Tim 1:13; 

It focuses on physical facts and experiences instead of the word of God eg in Nazareth, Jesus was still the son of the carpenter Mat 13:53-58; Mark 9:25-27 see Mat 17:19-21; Rom 4:19-20; John 20:24-29;

A believer in Christ can still have unbelief! Mat 17:19-21; eg Luke 1:18-20; Mark 16:14; Areas of unbelief: finances and provision, healing, holiness, protection, the power of God in us etc

DOUBT - doubt says ‘I am not sure’  Jas 1:6-8; Mat 14:31; Mat 28:17;  Faith says ‘I am sure it is done’

Doubt is halting between two opinions: God’s word and my reality Mat 14:28-31; Jas 1:6-7;

Doubt is the voice of Satan eg Gen 3:1-6; Mat 4:4; Mat 11:2-3 contrast John 1:29-36; 

We are exhorted never to doubt. Mark 11:23; Jas 1:6; 

FEAR - fear says ‘I am in danger’ Mat 8:23-26; Mark 4:40; Mat 14:24-31; Faith says ‘ I don’t fear, God’s got me covered’ eg 2Kings 6:14-17; 

Fear sees only the magnitude of the mountain eg Num 13:31-33; Num 14:6-9; 2Kings 6:14-17; Mat 14:30-31; Faith sees the mountain mover.

Fear is a tormentor 2Tim 1:7; 1John 4:18; 

Fear is bondage Rom 8:15; Heb 2:15 ; 

Refuse to fear Isa 54:14-17;  Psa 23:4; Heb 13:6; 

WORRY (ANXIETY) - worry says ‘I don’t know what will happen but I am expecting the worst’. Mat 6:25-34;  Faith says ‘ I don’t know what will happen tomorrow, but I know who controls tomorrow and he will take care of it all’ Psa 23:1; Phil 4:19; 

Worry fixates on the uncertainties of tomorrow. Mat 6:25; Mat 6:34; 

Worry is a product of self devaluation Mat 6:26; Mat 6:28-30; 

Worry solves no problems Mat 6:27; 

The solution to worry is absolute trust and dependence on a loving father-God. Mat 6:32-33; Phil 4:6; 1Pet 5:7; 

Conclusion 

Faith is sure and certain that what God says He will do He is able and willing to do it. Faith considers it done already if God says so. Faith is fearless and without anxiety. Focus on the One riding on the storms and you won’t fear the storms. Focus on the chariots of fire and you won’t fear the chariots of men. Focus on the shepherd and you won’t care where your supply will come from.
