This Sea Dart is one of five contracted by the Navy as a new prototype for a seaplane.
One Sea Dart disintegrated in midair in 1954, killing its pilot.
The remaining four Sea Darts survive in museums.
The Convair F2Y Sea Dart was an American seaplane fighter aircraft that rode on twin retractable hydro-skis during takeoff and landing.
It flew only as a prototype, and never entered mass production. It is the only seaplane to have exceeded the speed of sound.
The aircraft first flew in December, 1954. The project was eventually canceled.
This aircraft, Bureau No. 135764, was acquired by the Delaware Valley Historical Aircraft Association in 1987 and put on display after a complete restoration.
