Sounding smart in English, or any other language for that matter, does not mean that you have to use long and complicated words that native speakers never use. Instead, using slightly more sophisticated vocabulary in the right context will definitely help you sound smarter.

However, before using any new words, I strongly recommend writing down a few example sentences as a form of practice. One of the biggest mistakes a person can make is to use a word in the incorrect context. Unsurprisingly, this will instead make you sound....not that smart!
