Is formula FDA approved? 🤔 FDA regulated? 🤔 FDA registered? 🤔 What’s the difference, and which one is correct? Here’s your 30-second overview!
While you may hear the phrase “FDA approved” in regard to infant formula, this actually isn’t accurate. The FDA doesn’t approve formulas the way they approve drugs, because formula isn’t a drug— formula is FOOD. (And the most highly-regulated food product on the market at that!)
Instead of approving formula, FDA regulates formula. They issue regulations that formula manufacturers must abide by in order to sell, including:
-Which ingredients can and cannot be used in formula
-The maximum and mineral nutrient levels that formula must contain
-The process for introducing a substantially new ingredient to the market (via a growth trial and safety and efficacy data)
-How product must be safely manufactured, tested, canned, shipped, and stored
Additionally, the FDA monitors the market for products that do not comply and issues recalls, preventing non-compliant products from being marketed and sold.
