The Nazca Lines are a vast collection of ancient geoglyphs in the southern Peruvian desert, created between 500 BCE and 500 CE by the Nazca culture. Covering over 450 square kilometres, the site features hundreds of straight lines, geometric shapes, and large biomorphic figures (animals, plants, and humanoid forms) visible only from the air. Recent high-resolution drone, LiDAR, and ground surveys (2018–2025) have confirmed that many lines converge on ceremonial platforms, water sources, and small pyramids. Current scholarly consensus interprets the lines as a ritual landscape used for processional pilgrimages, water-related ceremonies, and symbolic communication with deities or ancestors in this hyper-arid region. Earlier astronomical or extraterrestrial theories lack supporting evidence. The geoglyphs remain remarkably preserved due to the desert’s climate, though they face ongoing threats from tourism and environmental change. As of early 2026, the lines are understood as a monumental expression of Nazca religious cosmology and social organization.
