Mount Evans (it has since been renamed Mount Blue Sky to reflect a more inclusive name) is one of the most iconic mountains in Colorado, dominating the skyline west of Denver. It even has a road to the summit. Its wilderness is also one of the most beautiful in the Front Range.
I had wanted to summit Mount Evans from Echo Lake for a while, a much longer hike (17+ miles RT) than the standard route that starts at Summit Lake (5.5 miles RT). In mid-August 2023, I finally did it with my sister.
Starting at Echo Lake, you actually descend in elevation for the first mile before crossing a creek and beginning the ascent. From there, the trail is really easy, basically the rest of the way to the summit, with a few short class 2 sections over steep talus. You pass by the stunning Chicago Lakes before ascending up to the standard route at Summit Lake. The hike is filled with wildlife, including yellow-bellied marmots, pikas, deer, and sometimes, even more.
