Cantabile pour cor anglais et piano is a slow, romantic era solo for English horn accompanied by piano. Rasse dedicates this piece to Fernand Piérard, a previous faculty member at the Royal Music Conservatory in Bruxelles. For some time, the conservatory would use this as an examination piece. Otherwise, the work had not garnered much attention, often overlooked among his other works.
The composer, François Rasse, was a violinist who would study under Eugene Ysaye (a highly regarded Belgian violinist and composer) for violin and François Gevaert and Gustave Huberti for composition. Rasse composed this piece very early in his career, working on it soon after he joined a professional orchestra on violin. As a composer and musician, Rasse had a great interest in the human voice, recreating the passion and emotions of the human voice through lyrical phrases for performers to sing through.
As his career continued, he would become respected for his work as a teacher, conductor, and music critic. Rasse's most notable compositions are his string quartets and piano works, which have garnered recognition for their depth and artistic innovation. The English horn and bass clarinet are the only wind instruments Rasse has composed a piece of solo repertoire for.
