(12 Aug 2015) Hundreds of Free Patriotic Movement supporters poured onto the streets of Beirut on Wednesday to protest against the extension of the terms of top Army officers and what they perceive as the government's marginalisation of Christian rights.
Convoys from across the country met with their compatriots in the capital, as others blocked the Beirut-Tripoli highway north of Beirut.
Protesters carried flags of the FPM party and chanted slogans supporting the party leader General Michel Aoun.
Lebanese defence minister Samir Moqbel last week extended the terms in office of Army commander General Jean Kahwagi, military Chief of Staff Major General Walid Salman and Higher Defence Council chief General Mohammad Kheir by one year each, despite fierce opposition from Aoun.
