How to measure streamflow like a hydrologist.
Deep in the heart of a giant redwood forest, I have discovered a powerful force of nature. Meet… BOB THE ORANGE, our slightly buoyant test subject.
This is streamflow analysis—but I think it’s just an excuse to throw fruit in water.
I mark a 30-foot section of the stream.
Next, I measure average depth and width across the stream bed.
I Release Bob, start the stopwatch, and chase him like my life depends on it!
Bob is fast….but so am I.
The difference between science and goofing off is the quality of your notes.
Distance divided by time gives us velocity.
Multiply velocity by width and average depth, and BAM!, we have stream flow calculated in cubic feet per second. Who needs fancy equipment when you have Bob?
