My FAN MADE trailer for the upcoming sequel to Disney's Maleficent. While there was a lot I liked about Maleficent (especially Angelina Jolie, who was absolutely perfect in the role), and I did enjoy watching it, it made me kinda angry. Like it basically tried to tell us all that our childhood was a lie. One of the coolest things about the character of Maleficent is that she's just unapologetically evil and malicious. She's the mistress of all evil. Instead of doing what a typical villain would do, she makes things more interesting, comes up with elaborate schemes and likes to watch people suffer. She has fun with her evilness and she absolutely revels in it.

By making the character a hero in the 2014 film, it completely disregards such an iconic, beloved villain and why she was so great. (And she doesn't even turn into a freakin' dragon....that's not okay.) I don't mind that they tried to give her a backstory and a motive, I don't like how they completely transformed her character. If the movie was about why she turned bad, I probably would’ve loved it, but instead, the movie was about how she wasn’t bad at all, which made me mad.

I prefer the faithful live-action adaptations of Disney's animated films like Cinderella, The Jungle Book, and Beauty and the Beast. I just really wish Maleficent was a faithful adaptation of the animated Sleeping Beauty. And I'm afraid we may never see one.

What I think these live action Disney adaptations SHOULD be (and what most people WANT them to be) are further explorations of the animated films. They should not try to replace or reconstruct them, but bring them to life with more detail, complexity, and sophistication. You will find freshness and new material in expansion, rather than reconstruction. The reason we go to Disneyland is to see the characters brought to life and that's the same case here.

But with that said, a Maleficent sequel is coming out and I really hope they find a way to correct the mistakes the 2014 film created. Jolie is perfect in the role and I just want to see her be the relentlessly evil character we all know and love.
