Body Cam Footage Shows Accused Cop Tracking Uvalde School Gunman

Описание: Jurors in the trial over a police officer's response to the 2022 mass shooting at Texas elementary school saw video today from a camera worn by now-former Sgt. T. Daniel Coronado of the Uvalde Police Department while he was responding to the reports of a gunman.

In direct-examination with Prosecutor Bill Turner, Coronado testified that an officer asked him for "permission to fire" when they were outside the school, but he didn't answer.

"Pete Arredondo." ( Arredondo also is charged with child endangerment and is scheduled for trial after Gonzales.)

01:43 "I'm sorry to interrupt there, but that's kind of an odd distress that comes to you," Turner says
"I thought so, too. Yes, sir," Coronado says
"Female shot in the head" (This is the gunman's grandmother, whom he shot before going to the school.)
"Yes, sir."
"But that comes in after you've already made your trip around the elementary school and just before you're going in?"
"Yes, sir."

03:06 "And who are these officers depicted in your body cam?"
"I believe Adrian Gonzales and Chief Arredondo."

05:39 "I think we were trying to advise officers that were approaching where the where the shooter was possibly located."

06:22 "An officer outside said, 'See that window shot out there. He's going to be in that room,'" Turner says
"Yes, sir," Coronado answers
"Who is that?" Turner asks
"Adrian Gonzales," Coronado answers
"So he was aware of that defect in the window on down the road?" Turner asks
"I don't know about a defect, but he was trying to advise officers where he was inside the building, more or less," Coronado answers

09:15 "As officers were approaching, he was yelling at them to be careful, because the shooter was on that side of the building, from what the information that we had, and I think he was concerned with officers approaching/

"Yes, sir," Coronado answers
"And where is his weapon?" Turner asks
"He has his weapon holstered at this point?" Turner asks
"It's holstered, yes, sir," Coronado answers

12:02 Audio from body cam: "We have multiple officers inside the building at this time. We believe he's barricaded in one of the, one of the offices, still shooting."

16:42 "Who said, 'I saw a teacher on the ground and I thought she tackled somebody'?" Turner asks
"Adrian," Coronado answers

18:50 Audio from body cam:
"Just to let you know, we do have a suspect that's been seen in the classroom. The windows are facing east. We have officers surrounding the area. We also have officers inside the building. We got color on the west side of the building. It's a brick building. He's shot several times out the window towards the east."

20:53 "And so from that point, did you backtrack where you had come before you saw first saw Adrian Gonzales?" Turner asks

"Yes, sir."
"And do you see the small figures of the two officers?"
"Yes, sir."

"And to be fair, he's not actually at the south entrance at that point. Is that correct?"
"No, he's approaching the south entrance."

25:58 "Do you see Adrian Gonzales in that photograph?"
"Yes, sir."
"And would you point him out?"
"Yes, sir, he's standing on the corner there."

28:01 "That looks to be the parking lot of on the west side of that building?" Coronado testifies
"And that was the condition it was in when you were out there," Turner asks
"To my knowledge, yes, sir," Coronado answers
"Because this is your body camera?" Turner asks
"Yes," Coronado answers

31:30 :"First, you have to determine the target and see your target, and then you have to ... to be aware of the backdrop," Coronado testifies

32:31 "Is there a backdrop there that concerns you?"
"Well, the entire, the entire area concerns me. I mean, we're, we're talking about a school and, yeah, there's a building here that belongs to the school."

33:32 "Did you come to know that this is a classroom building full of classrooms?"
"Yes, sir."
"And it was a school day?"
"Yes, sir, well..." "During school hours." (It was awards day at the school.)

"At some point from the time I exited my patrol vehicle to the time I made it to these two officers that were there pinned down."
An officer asked "permission to fire."
"Okay, did you respond?" Turner asks
"I did not respond," Coronado answers

35:33 "If you do see an individual with a gun, I've never been asked, or have ever heard of anyone asking for permission to fire. I mean, it's, I don't know what he was thinking or what, why he said that."
