The midwest state of South Dakota has one of the lowest abortion rates in the United States.
It is also a place where many pieces of anti-abortion legislation are conceived, before they are picked up and adapted by other states.
Pro-choice activists see the state as a key testing ground for such legislation, which also puts it at the centre of some of the most bitter fights on the abortion issue.
