The Kleine Alteiner waterfall is one of two cascading waterfalls near Arosa that plunge from the Schiesshorn massif towards Isel and Welschtobel. It is a popular destination for hikes through the wild nature of the Grisons mountains.
Hike and approach
The waterfalls are best viewed as part of a circular hike from Arosa (Untersee or Isel).
Route: The trail leads from the ARA Arosa or the Müliboden car park, initially along the flat Welschtobelbach stream. A small wooden bridge takes you to the left side of the valley, from where the ascent to the Kleiner Alteiner waterfall branches off.
Difficulty: The hike is classified as moderate (T2/T3).
Duration & distance: A typical circular tour (Arosa – Kleiner Alteiner waterfall – Alteiner waterfall – Arosa) takes about 3 hours, covers just under 10 km and involves an ascent of around 530 meters.
Combination: If you continue climbing, you will reach the large Alteiner waterfall (1,890 m above sea level) and finally the Alteinsee lake.
Practical information
Starting point: Untersee Arosa or Müliboden car park (subject to a fee).
View: The waterfalls are particularly impressive when viewed from the ascent from Isel towards Schiesshorn.
Season: The best time to visit is from June to October. In winter, the paths are often icy or covered in snow.
For detailed route planning, you can use the official hiking map of Arosa Lenzerheide.
