Authentic period color. What does that even mean?
Walk into any paint store and it's clear: historic colors, and the stories they tell, are a big business. But what makes a color "historic"? How do we how do we know? Are these colors the only colors for a time period? And if they are, why do they keep changing?
In this episode, join join Frank Vagnone, President of Old Salem Museums and Gardens and MESDA, and paint historian Patrick Baty, for a discussion of historic color ranges and what they really say about the past and the present.
Moderated by Daniel Ackermann, Chief Curator.
About the Presenters:
Frank Vagnone is President and CEO of Old Salem Museums & Gardens and the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts. An architect by training, an artist by temperament, and a human-centered preservationist at heart, Frank is the co-author of the Anarchist's Guide to Historic House Museums. Frank's experimental approach to historic sites can be seen in his "One Night Stand" project as well as in his transformation and leadership of Old Salem and MESDA chronicled in a series of articles for the American Alliance of Museums.
Patrick Baty is an internationally known paint historian and proprietor of the firm Papers and Paints on Park Walk in London. In 1982, Patrick "unwittingly introduced the whole idea of Historical Colours to the UK when I brought out the Historical Colours range... based on a range first released in 1934." Several years later he realized the problems with his new "old" colors when he discovered a set of early 19th century paint sample cards. Today, his work can be found in spaces ranging from royal residences to WWII era Tube Stations. He is the author of two books, The Anatomy of Color and Nature's Palette.
