On December 30, 1968, Howard was shot, blinded by explosions, his hands shredded by shrapnel, and unable to walk. Surrounded by 500 enemy soldiers in the Vietnamese jungle, he crawled from position to position for over 3 hours, saving his men and refusing to leave until everyone was evacuated.
