The humble tea bag was never part of some grand innovation plan. In 1908, a New York tea merchant named Thomas Sullivan accidentally changed how the world brews tea. He sent samples of tea in silk pouches to reduce packaging costs, but his customers misunderstood. Thinking the pouches were meant to be steeped directly in hot water, they unknowingly created a cleaner, faster way to brew tea. Sullivan noticed this feedback and pivoted to create the first paper-based tea bags that could be mass-produced, setting the stage for a global shift in tea culture.
What many people do not know is that a similar tea holder patent had already been filed in 1901 by Roberta Lawson and Mary Molaren, but it never took off the same way. It took decades for tea bags to be accepted, especially in Britain where they were dismissed as "lazy tea." But over time, this accidental method paved the way for modern infusion technologies beyond just tea - including soups, herbs, and detox blends. Tea bags remind us that sometimes, perception shapes innovation more than intention.
