Diastasis recti is a condition where the muscles in the middle of the abdominal wall (rectus abdominis muscles or "six-pack muscles") go off to the sides. This usually happens after pregnancy or massive weight loss. This will result in a bulge in the middle of the abdomen that is obvious during exertion like doing a sit up or getting out of bed.
This can be detected on physical exam. In this video, I used a high-resolution ultrasound to illustrate how the muscles contract and how the bulge forms when exerting. Notice the muscles at rest, and when the patient is asked to do a sit up, the muscle contracts (and shortens) while the diastasis, or area without muscle, bulges forward. This is the bulge that we notice that contributes to an abnormal appearance/contour in the abdomen.
The best and most effective way to correct this is by reconstructing the muscles of the abdominal wall - something that is done routinely during a traditional tummy tuck (also referred to medically as an abdominoplasty with rectus plication).
