Story Of Sati Anasuya
Anusuya was the daughter of Kardama, one of the Prajapati’s created by Lord Brahma and Devahuti, the daughter of Manu. In Sanskrit, “An'' is a negative prefix and "Asuya'' means jealousy. Hence, Anasuya could be translated as "the one who is free from jealousy or envy”. She is also known as Maha Sati Anasuya, Goddess of Chastity and Hospitality. ‘Maha’ means great and ‘Sati’ means virtuous woman, so her name implies a great virtuous woman, fully dedicated to her husband. The Bhagavata Purana mentions the story of Anasuya and Rishi Atri. Sage Kardama married Devahuti, daughter of Swayambhu Manu. They had ten children; one son by name Kapila (who was actually Lord Vishnu's avatar) and nine daughters. Anasuya was one among the daughters. Each of the daughters was married to a powerful Rishi and Anasuya was given away in marriage to Rishi Atri. Anusuya was the wife of rishi Atri and learnt under her brother, the great sage Kapila. She was mother of Durvasa , Chandraatri and Dattatreya, the 3 headed combined avatar of Brahma,Vishnu and Shiva. In the Ramayana, she is described as living with her husband in their small hermitage in the southern periphery of the Chitrakuta Forest. Very devout and pious, she practised austerity and was always devoted and loyal to her husband. It is mentioned in the Ramayana, that there was no rain in Chitrakuta for a decade.
