South Korean prosecutors said they were seeking a death sentence for former president Yoon Suk-yeol on January 13, 2026. Special prosecutor Cho Eun-suk’s team accused Yoon of orchestrating an “insurrection” by imposing martial law in a bid to cling to power. South Korean law does allow capital punishment, but none of the nation’s death row inmates have been executed in nearly three decades.
