The IRS audit notice is one of the worst things that you could encounter. This type of procedure is extremely unfair to most taxpayers. The IRS wants you to prove on up everything listed on the tax return. The very end of it could be a no-change audit.
That means these are squared away and you're fine. But for the most part, the audit will actually add taxes and civil penalties. With the civil penalties being as high as the fraud penalty of 75% of the tax, or could be an understatement of tax which is 40%, or another civil penalty worth 20% and initial changes are done on 4549 where they review all of the changes and you have 30 days to reply back to the letter.
But what happens if either don't respond back or the IRS says, hey, this is still not enough, then you get the notice of deficiency. And in order for you to appeal these changes, now you have to go to the tax court. And sometimes that's the appropriate route to take as a petition to the tax court to say, I disagree with the IRS and all the changes they made through this audit.
So it's very important that you tread very carefully when you do get an audit notice and reply back appropriately and on time to the IRS. If you happen to get an audit notice and need some professional help or some defense, comment audit will reach out and coordinate a free case review.
