The counterfeit drug industry is a $300+ billion market, killing more than 1 million people a year…yet shockingly, not many people have even heard of this problem. But deep tech AI entrepreneur Amy Kao wants to change that – starting with education and awareness of this global health crisis. Sharing her personal story and presenting a solution combining artificial intelligence and molecular spectroscopy, Kao breaks down the problem and explains in simple terms: what a fake drug is, why the market is so big, and what people can do about it. In a world where many people are not familiar with the counterfeit drug crisis, Kao emphasizes the importance awareness as a first step and says “Knowledge is Power. And in this case, it can save lives.” Amy Kao is on a mission to eliminate counterfeit drugs and ensure that every person has access to safe, quality medicines. Born in the USA, she has lived abroad in Shanghai, Singapore, and Hong Kong and is a first-hand witness to fake drugs in emerging markets. She now spends her time working both as a strategy management consultant – and heading up RxAll, a company she co-founded to combat counterfeit medicine using artificial intelligence and molecular spectroscopy.
A classically trained pianist and violist, Amy is also Founder of the International Music & Arts Society, a former Googler, and Miss Connecticut US International 2016. She was named Connecticut’s 40 Under 40 in Connecticut in 2017, and proudly advocates for diversity and inclusion on the runway as a model for New York and Los Angeles Fashion Week. Amy graduated with her B.S. from Carnegie Mellon University and her M.B.A from Yale University. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
