In this video, I answer the most common question I get on social media: what beginner telescope and camera should you buy for astrophotography?
After 14 years in this hobby—shooting everything from classic Milky Way panoramas to my signature wavy star trails—I'm sharing my straightforward, no-nonsense advice. We'll cover why you should absolutely stay away from cheap toy store telescopes, and why a good pair of binoculars or a 6-inch Dobsonian is a much better investment for your money.
I'll also share the ultimate secret to this hobby: Location is more important than gear. Whether you're hunting for dark skies near Nagpur or traveling to pristine locations like Leh Ladakh and Hanle, the environment matters more than what's in your camera bag. You don't need a massive budget to start—some of my best images were shot on a 15-year-old Nikon D7000 propped up on the ground!
If you want your kids—or yourself—to get hooked on observing the night sky, start simple. Go out at night, find a dark location, and just start shooting.
