The exercise consists of maintaining the individual in an upright standing position (orthostasis) on a wooden balance platform that performs anteroposterior oscillatory movements, requiring continuous postural adjustments and recruitment of the sensory, motor, and vestibular systems.
Concomitantly, the participant is instructed to respond to visual light stimuli by touching devices (pods) that illuminate randomly, positioned in front of the individual. This demand requires the simultaneous execution of a primary motor task (maintenance of dynamic balance) and a secondary cognitive task (visual attention, reaction time, and decision-making), thereby characterizing a dual-task condition.
Trained Functions
Dynamic balance and postural control
Sensorimotor integration
Sustained and selective visual attention
Reaction time
Motor coordination
Motor planning and rapid motor response
Clinical Considerations
The complexity of the exercise may be adjusted by modifying the amplitude and speed of the platform’s oscillation, the frequency and randomness of the visual stimuli, as well as the distance and spatial arrangement of the pods. Continuous professional supervision is recommended, with particular attention to safety, especially in older adults or individuals with neurological impairments, aiming at fall prevention.
