Pizzo Calabro (VV), Summer 2025 – A stunning aerial view of the charming port of Pizzo Calabro, nestled along the Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria. Bathed in summer sunlight, the turquoise waters, colorful boats, and historic seaside architecture capture the town’s timeless Mediterranean beauty.
Pizzo Calabro – A Town Steeped in History
Perched on a cliff overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, Pizzo Calabro boasts ancient roots dating back to Greek and Roman times. The town is famously known as the place where Joachim Murat, Napoleon’s brother-in-law and King of Naples, was captured and executed in 1815. Its historic Aragonese castle, narrow alleys, and centuries-old churches reflect a rich past shaped by conquests, trade, and maritime tradition.
Dominating the coastline, the Aragonese Castle stands as a symbol of Pizzo’s strategic importance through the centuries. Built in the 15th century by the Aragonese rulers of Naples, the fortress was designed to protect against pirate attacks and rival powers vying for control of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Its thick walls and battlements overlook the sea and the town below, offering stunning views. The castle is also historically significant as the prison and execution site of Joachim Murat in 1815, marking it as a poignant landmark where history and legend intertwine.
