On today's episode of Knowing and Going, we're in Croatia - in the Ancient city of Split - where we find ourselves boarding a ferry to Brac - the largest island in all of Dalmatia and the 3rd largest in the Adriatic.
All of this - part of a legendary Balkan Roadtrip - visiting 13 countries while bringing together friends new and old - from across the world - stepping out of our comfort zone, to explore the less-explored - from beaches to bunkers and castles - we’ll show you the spots while learning the history of this fascinating region.
But why Brac? and what makes it worth visiting if you're headed to split?
Well it all comes down to the suggestions of locals. After consulting the ferry schedule - It was settled - we would head out in the morning, taking the car off road - to explore and swim in an abandoned WW2 / COLD WAR SUBMARINE BUNKER / BASE - POTKOP SMRKA - all before visiting the town known for some of the most pure white marble in the whole world - used in the construction of the USA’s white house - before driving up to the top of the island for a sunset to remember, a new hitchiker friend, and a incredible dinner as we make good on a promise to our hostel mom to visit a most precious restaurant - all before making the last ferry home.
Just like the Ancient city of Split, the island of Brac has a key role in history. It’is one of the oldest human habitations in Dalmatia, with evidence of human activity going back over 13000 years. Illyrians, greeks, and romans, all called the island home, although larger settlements weren’t established until the arrival of the Slavs, and later the Venetians.
The island has a similar story to much of the Balkans, trading hands between vast empires. From the Byzantines, to the Venetians, between Austria-Hungary and Italy/Germany, to Yugoslavia, with Croatia gaining independence in 1991.
Throughout its enduring history, Brac has always been renowned for its high-quality limestone and marble. This 100 million year old white gold makes up the majority of the island and is a keystone in the island’s economy, even having a Stonemasonry school to promote and keep the art of marble sculpting alive. This marble was used in the construction of Roman Emperor Diocletian’s palace in Split during the late third century CE.
Stick around and get the context behind the destination - before you go. And as a bonus you'll be coming along for an adventure too.
If this is your first time here, I do educational vlogs focused on the history of the places I visit. Thanks for watching and I hope you take the time to check out my other content. Wishing you a fantastic day, and I'm deeply grateful for your support. Thank You!
