Описание: By August, the taro leaves (Gahala / Kiri Ala) begin to turn slightly yellow. It is said that this is the best time to harvest these yams. Although this tuber is called “Gahala” (green taro), it is traditionally known as “Kiri Ala” in Sri Lanka.
Taro is a highly nutritious and delicious root vegetable. Traditionally, Sri Lankans enjoy it by simply boiling it and eating it with “lunu miris” — a very famous Sri Lankan spicy chili relish — for breakfast. However, since we had a very spicy mutton curry planned for lunch, I decided to give this traditional tuber a twist by preparing a white curry instead.
For the mutton curry, I used only the finest, high-quality Sri Lankan spices. I prepare each spice and curry powder at home using our family’s traditional methods. Finally, I add some fresh red chilies to give the curry its intense heat. The flavor and richness of my mutton curry are enhanced by all these homemade spice blends. Because the mutton curry is fiery hot and spicy, I cooked the taro curry with plenty of coconut milk to balance and soften the heat of the mutton curry.
My grandmother makes a very delicious dish using the taro stem. I have never tasted that special dish she used to prepare. Did you know, my friends, that this dish is not easy to make? If even one step goes wrong, it can cause an itchy sensation in your mouth. The flavor becomes truly unforgettable when a small amount of dried shrimp is added to this dish!
I was extremely happy to see our lunch table set with such simple, highly nutritious, and delicious dishes — all prepared in minimal time.
Oh…! I almost forgot to tell you about the extraordinary yellow-colored delight we received from my aunt’s garden for dessert. This is a new version of the regular watermelon, but instead of the usual ruby red color, it has a beautiful golden-yellow flesh. It seems to be a new variety grown from seeds provided by an agricultural officer. The yellow watermelon is very similar to the red one, but its sweetness is almost honey-like.
And of course, I’m sure you couldn’t help but notice how our dear brother enjoyed every bite — holding it with both hands and eating with full enthusiasm!
