In May 1966, a routine search-and-destroy mission in the Central Highlands turned into one of the most lopsided and brutal engagements of the Vietnam War. What began as a hunt for a single NVA regiment became a desperate fight for survival as 400 men from the 1st Cavalry Division and 101st Airborne stumbled into a massive North Vietnamese base camp hidden in the Vinh Thanh Valley.
Outnumbered 5 to 1 and trapped in the "506 Valley" during the height of the monsoon season, these men became accidental bait for 2,000 NVA Regulars. With the jungle canopy swallowing the sun and torrential rains grounding their air support, the "400" had to hold a jagged perimeter against a relentless enemy that held the high ground.
This is the story of Operation Crazy Horse—a 16-day struggle of grit, high-altitude artillery lifts, and the raw "Combat Math" of a war where the odds were never in your favor.
