Hrossaborg was almost perfectly circular, 500 metres (1640 ft) in diameter all the way around. Due to floods, however, it has since been distorted, with an opening in its eastern wall. The Crater was formed about 1000 years ago, when hot magma rose to the surface of the Earth and came in contact with underground water. That produced a heavy steam explosion, forming the crater that we see today.
Grábrók is a volcanic crater east of Lake Hreðavatn in the fjord of Borgarfjörður in West Iceland. Formed approximately 3,400 years ago. Grábrók is the largest of three craters within the same volcanic fissure. The fissure is only about 7 kilometres in length with the average thickness of 20 metres.
Hverfjall is a tuff ring volcano with an incredibly impressive crater, approximately one kilometre in diameter. Created about 2,500 years ago, Hverfjall is connected to the very active Krafla volcanic system, which has been the cause of 29 eruptions since settlement.
