Wildlife rescuers were called to a house in Victoria to tend to a young brushtail possum that had been “purposely trapped” in a cage and left out in the open.

Although the homeowner reported the situation to Wildlife Victoria once they realised that the possum had been caught, a spokesperson for the Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network told Yahoo News Australia that the “possum had [still] sustained facial injuries from trying to escape through the wire mesh of the trap and was showing signs of dehydration and stress from exposure.”

The spokesperson added, “Once [the possum’s] recovered and deemed fit for realism, he’ll return to his original home range - within 50 metres of where he was found - and a possum box will be installed nearby to provide safe, alternative housing.”

While it’s illegal in most Aussie states to catch and release possums from roof spaces without a license, Victorian residents are allowed to do so as long as they follow strict regulations.

However, breaching the regulations could carry a penalty of two years imprisonment of a $44,380 fine.
